In addition to completing the designated graduate admissions process, international applicants who wish to apply to The University of Texas at Austin are required to submit an official score report from either the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) to demonstrate their proficiency in English. It is important to note that the Institutional TOEFL (ITP) and the IELTS General Training are not accepted.

To determine which test is preferred for your specific program of interest, it is recommended to refer to the website of that program.

Exemptions International applicants from qualifying countries are exempt from this requirement. Additionally, applicants who hold a bachelor’s degree from a U.S. institution or a qualifying country are also exempt. However, applicants who possess a master’s degree from a similar institution but not a bachelor’s degree are not exempt from this requirement.

Minimum Scores Minimum score requirements may vary depending on your major and other factors such as employment as a teaching assistant. The Graduate School considers the following minimum scores acceptable for admission:

  • TOEFL: 79 on the Internet-based test (iBT)
  • IELTS: Overall band of 6.5 on the Academic Examination

Submission of Scores Scores must be sent directly to the university by the testing agency, as self-reported scores are not accepted. The Educational Testing Service (ETS) institution code for UT Austin is 6882. For the IELTS examination, there is no institutional code. To fulfill the requirement using IELTS scores, please utilize the IELTS electronic score delivery service to send your scores to the “The University of Texas at Austin” account.

Agents

The University of Texas at Austin does not engage third-party agents or agencies in the recruitment of international students for admission at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This practice is in accordance with Title IV of the US Higher Education Act, which prohibits commission-based recruitment for students from the USA. While international students are exempt from this provision as they are not eligible for federal assistance, the Graduate and International Admissions Center extends this principle to international recruitment as well. Therefore, the Graduate and International Admissions Center does not enter into contractual arrangements with third-party recruiters in the international admissions process. Furthermore, the center does not engage in discussions with third-party recruiters retained by applicants or their families. The Graduate and International Admissions Center exclusively communicates directly with applicants and their families during the admissions process. It is important to note that this statement refers only to third-party recruiters and not to admissions consultants who provide guidance on the US higher education application process for overseas applicants and their families.
